Chasing Europe

Thirty-three days.
Seven countries.
Ten cities.
Over a dozen towns and villages.
A lifetime of memories.

Ah, Europe.

Is there anything more romantic than wandering around the lamp-lit streets of Paris? Or exploring a medieval castle in England? Or perhaps you'd like to go on a gondola ride in Venice? These are just some of the scenes that I have played in my mind countless of times. Europe was the ultimate destination, the life-long dream. So when my daydreams actually came true, I was over-the-moon with happiness. It was everything I thought it would be and so much more. I could not help but fall in love with every town and city we went to. It was like stepping into the pages of a story book where time has stopped and everything is a marvel.

Looking back, it all seemed like a hazy, rose-tinted dream filled with postcard perfect images. An English cottage surrounded by wild roses that climb and ramble. A rustic, Italian villa perched on the shores of a crystalline lake. A French chateau with immaculately manicured gardens. The crumbling ruins of an ancient civilization. An old wooden bridge with swans gliding by. Evergreens and snow-capped mountains. Idyllic seaside villages with windmills blowing at the slightest touch of the breeze. The prettiest pastel buildings and the coziest promenade cafes. One iconic landmark after the other... Oh, what I wouldn't give to relive those glorious summer days spent in some of the most beautiful countries in the world.

While our trip wasn't all sunshine and roses, I prefer to gloss over some of the more mundane aspects of our tour, which was something of a whirlwind ride. We were continually hopping from one place to another. In some places we only had a day (or even half a day) but we did park in Paris for a week while we went all over Italy for two weeks. This kind of touring might not appeal to some people who prefer a more leisurely pace but it actually worked out quite well for us. Think of it like a buffet, we had bite-sized and not-so bite-sized samplers of seven countries in a little over a month. And now that we've had a taste, we plan on savoring the best bits the next time we go back to Europe. Then again, why go back to the places we've seen when new countries, new sights and new adventures are waiting for us? One thing's for sure, my love affair with Europe has just begun!
